Music Video: Filming Blog

Image
On Monday, November 23rd, I began and finished my filming project and there were a few problems that occurred along the way. To begin, the original setting of the film was supposed to be at a city park, however, because of the pandemic caused by the coronavirus, the park was closed. My partner and I had to find a new, better, and as effective, place to film. We decided to film in one of our mutual friend's neighborhood and although it was smaller and less vibrant, it seemed to do the job quite well and we had to innovate. Since the park in the neighborhood was a little smaller, we decided to use the neighborhood itself to serve as another setting for the shots. This was my second time filming and it went considerably smoother and faster compared to my first. I knew what angles I wanted, what movement would best suit the scene, and a good way to show the message of the song. I incorporated close shots, long-shots, reverse shots, tracking, and panorama shots in different takes of the...

1st Scene This first scene will be an introduction to the main character who is the protagonist in this film. This will be them walking by themselves in the park and will be filmed using tracking. 2nd Scene This scene will be used to set the mood of the film if the music has not done so already. The protagonist will be filmed with his back facing toward the camera on a set of swings by himself. This will be filmed using a long-shot 3rd Scene This will be a final introductory scene where the actor will be filmed sitting with their head down to show a discouraged type of expression. Here the audience will recognize a problem. This will be a handheld shot. 4th scene This will be an introduction to the bully, the antagonist, who will walk into the scene and will serve as a flashback from the perspective of the protagonist. This will be filmed using tracking. 5th Scene Here eye contact between the bully and the protagonist is established and a clear tension is made within the flashback. Thi...

Music Video: Planning

The song title that my partner and I are doing is 'losses' by Lil Tjay. Lil Tjay is a young rapper born in 2001. His real name is Tione Jayden Merritt. He has a record label to Columbia Records. As a rapper at a young age, we can relate to what is being said in his song 'losses'. As we all lose something in life and want to be an influence to those who also went through a loss. Want the people to know it is okay to talk about it. The costumes that the actors will wear is some casual clothing. That being hoodies, jeans, joggers, sneakers, sandals, t-shirts, etc. Props that will be in the music video are phones, book bags, or something that helps convey a conflict for the protagonist. Schedule: Storyboard: November 20 Filming: November 30 Editing: December 3rd Editing: December 7th Music video: December 8th CCR: December 11th The location of the video will switch between in an outside environment. Like the store, park, or somewhere where people hang out. Another locatio...

Research: Music Video Conventions

Image
My film will be based around Lil Tjay's latest song, losses. The song itself has a vibrant, steady beat complimented by Tjay's catchy vocals. Usually in music videos, especially one telling a story, there is a protagonist and an antagonist to represent the clash between the two and help deliver the message of song. In this case, the message is taking a loss and being able to bounce back harder than before.  Actors can range from one main protagonist fighting a problem to a multitude of people involved dancing and having fun depending on the song and director. Regardless of the amount of people, the theme of the video is always explicit and present.  Costumes in a music video really depend on the song. A hype summer song that focuses on parties and having a good time is likely to have people in swimwear, short pants, flip flops, and t-shirts on the other hand, a love song is likely to have two people with love interests dressed up in suits and dresses in a restaurant or comfor...

Music Video Introduction

Image
Introduction Instead of creating a commercial or a film, I will be creating a music video. this should be a fun and exciting project as I use different the of media that isn't as prominent in previous projects: music! In this project, I will be working with a friend of mine, Cleveland Williams who has also helped me with the interview project on genre. I chose this person in particular because we have good chemistry and we can get work done together. he's reliable and he knows a great variety of music himself which is important because seeing things from a different perspective can change how you see things yourself. The name of the song we chose was Losses by Lil Tjay, his latest hot single. It talks about his struggles and hardships while growing up including people he's lost, and his time served in jail. Here he explains his time being at the lowest of the low, thus taking a lot of losses. Other rappers would rap about extreme topics such as drugs, sex, and violence, bu...

My Commercial: Reflection

Image
1. How does your product use or challenge conventions AND how does it represent social groups or issues? This was my first time filming and I had to incorporate many different people and realized the effort that it took to create even a 30 sec film. It represents issues such as representation and working around obstacles. Representation is shown by establishing a product. The Xbox logo, controller, and start-up is iconic to Microsoft immediately showing the audience what the film is about without even saying a word. Moreover, when editing and filming you have to work around obstacles that can be in your way whether that being your film being too long and you have to cut out some crucial scenes, or maybe re-filming behind schedule because you forgot a crucial part of your film.  2.  How does your product engage with audiences AND how it would be distributed as a real media text. My product engages with audiences by exposing them to a new product, whether that be the console its...

My Commercial

Image
Results Although this is my first film, I am happy with the results  especially after hours on recording sounds, editing and filming . Although it isn't a blockbuster you would pay 15 dollars to see, or the work of a professional director, it is a valid representation of what I am capable to do right now. The future me is definitely going to be surprised by how much I improved as I can already see what I can work on after reviewing the film now. All in all, this was a fun project and I enjoyed the time I took with it.

Editing Blog

My Process Saying editing was long and difficult would be an understatement. Although it was it was only a 30 second commercial, it took hours upon hours of constant trimming, splitting, adding audio, rearranging clips, adding transitions, and finding music that would fit the idea of my commercial. I begin by dumping all of my clips, recordings, and song choices into iMovie, a video editing app. Additionally, to fully capture the idea the Xbox, I had to incorporate some gameplay to give the viewer a genuine fun experience which I had to upload. I uploaded all the takes from the shots I took when filming and I had about 15 different takes for each scene all which had a small error of some kind. It was up to me to identify the error, trim or cut it out, and then figure out which part could be considered usable. One thing that was extremely crucial was the time limit. I had so many clips to use and such as small amount time to work with. Not only did I have to trim the clips to allow...
